Homemade organic popcorn with coconut oil

Popcorn is one of those timeless snacks that almost everyone likes.
No wonder because it tastes good, it’s fun to eat (and to make!) and you can have it both savory and sweet.
It’s very easy to make your own homemade organic popcorn with coconut oil.

Popcorn can actually be a very healthy snack when done right.
The two main things are not to use microwave popcorn (anything microwave really) and to buy organic corn.
Regular corn is often GMO, which I personally try to avoid.

You need a big pot with a lid and just pop the corn in some coconut oil with a dash of Himalaya salt.
Add your favorite spices or hot chilli sauce for more taste!

If you’re not much into a coconut flavor with your popcorn, use a high quality refined organic coconut oil.
This coconut oil is neutral, so you won’t taste any coconut.
In this article I explain what to look out for when buying refined coconut oil.

What’s really interesting is that popcorn is actually a very ancient snack.
It goes back thousands of years to native tribes in the Americas. While popcorn was made famous by the Aztecs, it were the Zapotecs, an earlier ancient Mexican tribe who used popcorn as early as 500 BCE.

These tribes did not only eat the popcorn, they used it during special celebrations and rituals.
Talking about a snack with history and soul!

Ingredients:

1/2 cup / 90 grams of organic dried corn kernels
2 tsp of coconut oil – virgin or refined
Himalaya salt

spices (optional)
hot chilli sauce (optional)

This recipe is for old-school popcorn made in a pot.
If you’re using a hot air popcorn maker, just follow the instructions of your device.

Use virgin coconut oil if you like a coconut taste or a good quality organic refined coconut oil for a neutral taste.

Heat the oil in a big pot on medium heat. Put a few corn kernels in and once they’ve popped, put in the rest of the corn.

For the best results, cover the bottom of the pot with just one layer of corn. This is to make sure that most kernels will pop and none won’t burn.

Remove the pot from the fire for about half a minute, then put it back on.

The corn will start popping very soon.

Let it sit until the pops slow down.

Once you hear a few seconds between the pops, the popcorn is ready.

Remove the pot from the heat, add some salt and transfer the popcorn to a big bowl.
